As the 2023-24 college basketball season started, it was all but assumed that Bronny James – the eldest son of NBA megastar LeBron James – would spend one, obligatory season at USC, declare for the NBA Draft, and join his dad in some pro locale, wherever that may be. 

But it appears times have changed. The college hoops season didn’t go as planned for Bronny or the Trojans. Now, it appears the player is not only going to remain in college for another year, he appears to be strongly considering doing what so many other hoopsters are doing at this time – entering the transfer portal.

For a while now, LeBron James has been open and honest about his desire to someday play alongside his son, Bronny James, in the NBA. 

It was presumed Bronny at USC would be a one-season thing, before entering the 2024 NBA Draft. There was little coincidence that LeBron James owned a player option for the 2024-25 season. By forgoing the option, LeBron can become an unrestricted free agent – and join Bronny, with whichever team drafts his son. 

But with sky-high expectations, the Trojans finished 15-18 overall, 8-12 in the Pac-12, with a humbling 70-49 loss to Arizona to end their season. 

Bronny started only six games, averaging 4.8 points on 36.6% shooting, 2.8 rebounds, and a nearly 1/1 assist-to-turnover ratio. USC coach Andy Enfield took a buyout to become the new coach at SMU.

It sounds like Bronny could use a fresh start, and colleges will be lining up to see which can provide it. 

First, he could remain at USC. The new coach, whoever it is, is likely to welcome Bronny back. The shooting guard can expect bigger minutes in his second year, one year removed from a cardiac health scare that caused him to miss nearly the first month of the season. 

If he goes elsewhere, a few schools – many of which competed with USC the first time around – get preference. 

Oregon, Duke, and Ohio State lead the charge. Oregon, the home of Nike and a reported finalist for Bronny this time last year, joins the Big Ten next season. Ohio State is where Pops nearly went to college. The family has respected the Duke brand for years.

In terms of team need: Oregon has just one commit in the Class of 2024, and he’s a center. Ohio State has a transfer SG from South Carolina coming in. Duke’s class ranks No. 1 and is absolutely stocked with small forward-types. 

Bluebloods Kansas, Kentucky, and North Carolina aren’t far behind. KU was a contender to land Bronny originally. LeBron and John Calipari’s relationship, and his history of getting kids NBA-ready, puts the UK firmly into the mix. 

UNC has a five-star SG and five-star SF lined up for next season. Kentucky and Kansas have SGs coming in, but there is a spot for Bronny on those rosters. 

If Bronny doesn’t want to venture far from home, UCLA is a three-mile jaunt from Beverly Hills, where he grew up. 

James could still decide to enter the 2024 NBA Draft. The deadline for early entry is April 27.
