Plymouth Argyle continue their search for a new manager after Steven Schumacher agreed to make the move to fellow Championship team Stoke City in December. Schumacher led the team to promotion from League One, and they are safely in the lower mid-table of the league at present despite being one of the favourites for relegation at the start of the season with many football betting sites.

The board will want a swift appointment to ensure the team stay on track to keep their Championship status for next season. The initial market with the best betting apps suggested former Everton and England defender Leighton Baines was the clear front-runner to take the role but now more names have entered the fold.

Other names in the frame included John Eustace, who is still out of a job after being harshly sacked by Birmingham City in favour of Wayne Rooney earlier this season, and Nathan Jones, who led Luton Town with such distinction in between poor spells with Stoke and Southampton. However, the front-runner for the role is former Fulham and Bournemouth boss Scott Parker. He is leading the pack behind former Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, who has been out of the limelight of English football for some time.

Paul Cook Ready to Move From National League?

Chetserfield came within a penalty shootout of making it into League Two last season under Paul Cook, and now they are looking like champions-elect of the National League already. Cook has his team eight points clear at the top with two games in hand.

They are on course to challenge the record points totals achieved by Wrexham and Notts County last year, so would Cook consider jumping ship before the season ends? It's a huge step up to go from the National League to the Championship, so it could be hard to turn down and betting sites think he's in with a good shout of getting the job.

Baines Among Favourites for the Role

Since retiring from playing in 2020 with Everton, Baines has been a professional development coach with the Toffees as he works towards his first taste of management. It would be something of a gamble to appoint Baines give his lack of experience in management, but Schumacher’s first top job was also with Plymouth, so they have previous. The odds with most UK betting sites suggest Baines will at least be interviewing for the role.

Eustace Ready for Return to Championship?

John Eustace was doing a great job with Birmingham City to almost everyone apart from those who mattered. He had led the team to their highest points tally since 2016 last season despite them being favourites for the drop with some new betting sites. They were then riding high in sixth in October when Eustace was relieved of his duties in favour of the bigger name Wayne Rooney, who has notably struggled since taking over.

Jones Could Provide Magic for Smaller Profile Club

Nathan Jones has performed miracles with Luton Town in two separate spells while struggling majorly in higher profile roles with Stoke and Southampton. Perhaps the club could have a low enough profile for him to go under the radar somewhat. Jones is likely to be an interesting candidate to the Plymouth board.
