The self-professed Special One Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager of Italian Serie A club Roma this week after their worst league campaign for 20 years. It followed a tumultuous two-and-a-half years in charge that provided the club’s first trophy in 14 years in the form of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Given Mourinho’s high profile, and his lust for winning trophies everywhere he’s been (sorry, Tottenham fans), it is no surprise that his name is being linked to jobs all around the world. Indeed, the best football betting sites around have been pricing up what the Portuguese coach’s next move will be. Will he stay in Europe, or chase the riches on offer elsewhere in the world?

Will Newcastle Be Tempted by Star Name?

Newcastle were the Premier League’s surprise package last season, as they were title contenders for the first two-thirds of the season and managed to qualify for a Champions League spot. As a result, expectations were very high for the Geordies as they embarked on another year under the super-rich ownership of the Saudi-backed PIF.

Most betting sites had Newcastle as one of the favourites to make the top four once again, but just over the halfway mark of the season, the Magpies are in 10th, 11 points off fourth and having been dumped out of Europe in the group stage. The pressure is on manager Eddie Howe, and it could be the ambitious owners look to someone with plenty of trophies on their CV in Mourinho. The latest odds with betting apps suggest it could happen.

Mourinho Set for Saudi Venture?

With Mourinho’s star fading somewhat after being sacked in his last four roles with Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and now Roma, perhaps he will look for a larger payday than he might be able to secure elsewhere. That would be in the form of the rapidly expanding Saudi Pro League.

With the league and clubs looking to add huge names to help expand the league, it only makes sense that Mourinho would be linked with a role. His odds of joining a club in the league with new betting sites would suggest it is not out of the question.

Would a Porto Homecoming Interest Mourinho?

Mourinho made his name in football management with Porto. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, he was a virtual unknown having grown in the game more as an interpreter for Sir Bobby Robson in stints at Sporting CP, Porto and Barcelona. After short spells at both Benfica and Uniao de Leiria, he caught the attention of Porto, and it was a match made in heaven.

In just two seasons at Porto, he won six trophies, including the team’s second-ever European Cup and the first-ever UEFA Cup the year prior. A star was born, and he was inevitably only going to be around for so long. Chelsea then came calling, and he has enjoyed success virtually everywhere he has gone since.

Porto didn’t win the league title last season and sit in third this season, so it is fair to assume manager Sergio Conceicao is feeling the heat, even more so now that Mourinho is available. While not seen as likely at most UK betting sites.

International Management Could Come Calling

There has been a belief for some time that eventually Mourinho would manage the Portugal national team, while there were reports that Mourinho could have been a target for the FA to manage England some time ago. While Portugal have a recent manager in charge in Roberto Martinez, the upcoming Euro 2024 could be Gareth Southgate’s final campaign in charge of England, so expect Mourinho’s odds to shorten with most football betting sites if he stays out of a job until then. He's available at 100/1 to be the next Republic of Ireland manager too, for those looking to part with some cash.
