Solskjaer, who initially arrived as caretaker boss after Jose Mourinho’s departed Old Trafford, began his managerial career with the Red Devils in fine form which earned his the role on a permanent basis.

However, a quiet summer led to some discontent among the United fanbase - in particular, the reluctance to replace striker Romelu Lukaku who made his way to Serie A Inter Milan.

A large contingent of United supporters have been calling for Solskjaer’s head, with last weekend’s 1-0 defeat the hands of Bournemouth not helping matters for the Norwegian. It’s a situation which could be compounded should United not take all three points in their Europa League contest against Partizan this Thursday.

Among the favourites to replace Solskjaer - who appears near the top of the next manager to be sacked - are out-of-work Italian Massimiliano Allegri, formerly of Juventus, and current under-fire Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Allegri heads the betting as a 5/2 favourite with most online bookmakers, although Poch is not far behind. The Argentine - whose job security with his current employers is at an all-time low - is priced up at 4/1 to take charge at Old Trafford.

Give Ole Time?

But whilst some United fan circles are gunning for a fresh face in the hot-seat, former Man United and England full-back Paul Parker reckons a switch of personnel could only make things worse.

He said: “I know Allegri has been mentioned as a possible replacement, Pochettino and Laurent Blanc too, but the problem is they’ll just be walking into the same scenario. Journalists can link these names to the job, but does anyone really know if they would even want the job?

“They might not want to risk tarnishing their reputation because everyone knows by now how difficult a job it is.

“Ole knows what he was getting himself into. He knew the stipulations, now he’s just got to get on with it. Jose Mourinho knew the stipulations too, and he was all too keen to let everyone know how difficult it was, and in the end Manchester United – the business – could not continue to allow that negativity to come out and so they got rid.

“With Ole it’s different. He’s willing to suffer in silence because he loves Manchester United and he wants to turn things around to become a legend second time around. Given what he’s up against, if he can restore the club’s status in time, then that has to be seen as an enormous triumph.”
