Dan Skelton Horses to Follow

Dan Skelton is once again enjoying a brilliant season on the British jumps scene. Much like his former boss Paul Nicholls, Skelton has been keen to keep all of his horses busy at various tracks throughout the week, but he also has a collection of top-level horses that are worth following at the big festivals.

Galia Des Liteaux is one such horse. A decent hurdler, the former point-to-point winner was always going to be better over fences, and that has proved to be the case for the talented mare. She has progressed nicely this season over the larger obstacles and she could have a good future ahead, particularly on heavy ground.

Langer Dan is a decent hurdler as it stands, but he has the potential to improve even more when tested over a further trip. That is likely to happen at Cheltenham this year, where the seven-year-old could be a decent shout in some of the festival handicaps.

Punta Del Este is the newest French juvenile that has arrived at Skelton’s yard, and he looks like a horse that could have a good future. His jumping left a little to be desired on his debut at Haydock, but if his trainer has sorted out those jumping issues, he could be one to watch in the coming months.

Dan Skelton horses for Cheltenham

The main name amongst Dan Skelton’s horses set to line up at Cheltenham is the Gold Cup contender Protektorat. Third in last year’s renewal, Protektorat showed he is still in fine fettle by winning the Betfair Chase earlier in the season, but he will need to run the race of his life if he is to beat the opposition he faces this year.

Skelton has a terrific record in the County Hurdle at the festival and he will again have a strong chance of winning the 2m1f handicap with the unexposed Pembroke. Likely to be Skelton’s best chance of a winner at this season’s festival, Pembroke has all of the characteristics needed to win a contest of this nature and could give his trainer a fourth win in the race.

One of Skelton’s stalwarts Nube Negra will again try to register his first Cheltenham win this season in the Champion Chase. Beaten just ½ length in the 2021 renewal, Nube Negra continues to perform superbly in Grade 1 contests, and this season’s Shloer Chase winner will again run his heart out for his proud trainer.

Other horses that have a chance of giving Skelton a festival win in 2023 include Third Time Lucki, Midnight River and Unexpected Party.

Dan Skelton horses for the Grand National 2024

Dan Skelton has yet to taste victory in the Grand National, and although he will be represented by some decent horses in 2023, he will need a lot of luck to make it his year at Aintree. Le Milos’ Coral Gold Cup win in November has put him firmly in the frame for a big National run, and he is likely to be Skelton’s main hope this year. He is set to have a nice weight on his back, and the marathon trip could be right up his street.

Ashtown Lad is set to be Skelton’s other runner in the race, although he will need some rivals to pull out if he is to get a run. He showed his liking for the National fences when winning the Becher Chase in December, and a big run can be expected at a track that he seems to love.

Dan Skelton Biography

Being the son of the world-famous showjumper Nick Skelton and having learned his trade as assistant trainer to Champion trainer Paul Nicholls, there is little that Dan Skelton doesn’t know about horses.

There were many avenues in the equine world open to him after a childhood spent travelling the world with his father, but being a racehorse trainer was always the dream for a young Dan. The plan from an early age was for Dan himself to train the horses, and younger brother Harry would become the stable jockey.

At the age of 19, Dan would join the powerful yard of Paul Nicholls, who took the inquisitive youngster under his wing and would eventually promote him to be his right-hand man as an assistant trainer.

During his time with Nicholls, Dan would be part of a golden era of horses at the Ditcheat yard, with the likes of Kauto Star, Denman, Masterminded and Big Bucks, among others, winning the majority of top-level races throughout the years.

In 2013, at the age of just 28, Skelton would make the bold decision to stand on his own two feet as a trainer, and with the blessing, and years’ worth of knowledge from Nicholls, he took out his own licence and began training in Warwickshire.

Despite a slow start to his fledgling training career, Skelton was soon up and running and recording plenty of wins thanks to a group of trusting owners who gave the youngster a chance to find his feet.

In just a few years, Skelton would become one of the most consistently successful trainers in the industry and recorded his first century of winners in a season in 2015-16. He has gone on to repeat that feat in every season since.

In the 2018-19 season, Skelton would record over 200 winners in a season, with his horses winning over £2 million in prize money, showing his runners are well worth a look on sportsbooks. He eventually reached the milestone figure of 1,000 winners in November 2021.

To achieve that feat in under 10 years is astonishing, and if continuing at the same rate, and at his young age, it would be no surprise to see Skelton becoming one of the greatest National Hunt trainers of all time.
