Since going 3-13-1 in 2021, Dan Campbell’s Detroit Lions have taken major steps in the right direction. They finished 9-8 in 2022 then last year went 12-5 and lost in the NFC Championship Game, blowing a lead against the 49ers.

There’s only one step left – the biggest of them all – and the Lions can bolster their chances with a solid start to the 2024 NFL Draft.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has used his resources of NFL contacts developed over 20 years covering the league and the NFL Draft to create his hypothetical NFL futures odds on who gets selected 29th by the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFL Draft.

2024 Detroit Lions NFL Draft Prospects

A lot of things went right for the Lions in 2023. They dominated the NFC South, Jared Goff emerged as the QB leader Campbell hoped he was, and even the defense, which ranked dead-last in yards allowed in 2022, finished 19th in the category.

But there is still work to be done. Detroit was still 29th vs. the pass, despite leading the NFL in QB pressure. That means the defensive backfield was an abject disaster. They added cornerback Carlton Davis from the Buccaneers and further bolstered the D-line, but that’s not expected to fix all the issues.

Cornerback will continue to be a focus in the draft. Which of the top prospects will be available by No. 29 is a crapshoot. Quinyon Mitchell of Toledo and Terrion Arnold of Alabama won’t be, and Nate Wiggins of Clemson is probably gone by No. 29 as well.

But there are three other CBs graded as first-round talents that could be around this late. Kool-Aid McKinstry of Alabama, Cooper DeJean of Iowa, and Ennis Rakestraw of Missouri each could be available, or none of them could be. Renaldo Green of Florida State has improved his draft stock as well. McKinstry is the least likely to be around at No. 29.

Minnesota’s Tyler Nubin is a fringe first-rounder, but also the best safety in the class. There is a strong possibility a team snags him on Day 1, and it absolutely could be Detroit.

Edge rushers Chop Robinson of Penn State and Darius Robinson of Missouri may be around this late and could be very talented depth at an important position. But shoring up the D-backfield is the top defensive priority.

The interior line could still be a target for Round 1. The O-line overall ranked among the very best in the NFL, but it also lost LG Jonah Jackson in free agency, creating a hole. Cooper Beebe of Kansas State owns an early second-round projection but could fill that hole in Week 1 for the Lions
