They didn’t make the playoffs, but Year One of Sean Payton as coach of the Denver Broncos actually went pretty well. The team finished 8-9, a three-game improvement over the previous season. The offense made leaps and bounds despite a rotating door of QB play.

Russell Wilson is now out, jettisoned to Pittsburgh. Jarrett Stidham is currently the QB1 on the Denver depth chart. By the end of April, that could change.

Bookies.com veteran oddsmaker Adam Thompson has used his resources of NFL contacts developed over 20 years covering the league and the NFL Draft to create his hypothetical NFL futures odds on who gets selected 12th by the Denver Broncos in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Top 2024 NFL Draft Broncos Prospects

The Broncos were mired in salary cap hell before cutting Wilson, adding more pain to the coffers. They spent much of the off-season cutting rather than adding. The cuts made interior line and receiver spots to improve, as well as every level of the defense.

Quarterback is also a massive position of need. But in a draft full of blue-chippers, the Broncos are likely picking too late to nab any of the four top guns.

If Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy remains available at 12, he won’t go past. But the Broncos may have to trade up to acquire him, something that’s clearly been discussed and strongly rumored.

They could take the next-best QB available at 12. Bo Nix of Oregon and Michael Penix Jr. of Washington are the only other two QBs in the draft that are likely to go in the opening 3-4 rounds. If Denver wants one and doesn’t want to risk it, they absolutely could reach here.

Nix is a five-year college starter, and a 6-foot-2 pocket guy. So, too, was Taylor’s QB with the Saints, Drew Brees. Penix had a spectacular 2023 and is more mobile, but injury concerns (including two torn ACLs) offer a pause this early.

While the top edge rushers will be gone, and no linebackers are considered Top 20 material, the leading cornerbacks could be available here.

Quinyon Mitchell of Toledo has the size (6-foot, 195 pounds) and the speed (4.33 40-yard dash) to compete at the highest level. Terrion Arnold of Alabama is just as big and, unlike Mitchell, competed at the highest level of college football – the SEC – and was a first-team All-American.

Quinyon’s tangibles rank higher, and Arnold’s experience is a bonus. The Broncos could use either one to pair with Patrick Surtain II for a high-level CB tandem.

No. 12 could be the right spot to snag Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, a George Kittle-type pass-catcher who was nearly unguardable in college. Denver is currently riding with Adam Trautman, who averaged under two receptions per game in 2023.
